Arasuke
Born in 1989 in Osaka, Japan. After graduating from Kyoto Seika University and working as a signboard artisan for five years, Arasuke became an independent illustrator.
Since relocating to Tokyo in 2020, Arasuke has expanded across diverse artistic boundaries—moving from commercial illustration translating words into visuals, to site-specific painting and spatial installations.
Statement
"Pre-Verbal Abstraction"
Having worked as an illustrator translating language into concrete imagery, the rise and rapid evolution of generative AI led me to question the fundamental meaning of converting words into pictures.
Painting possesses a profound abstraction that goes beyond literal illustration (where language and image are closely tied)—a depth accessible only through individual intuition. I seek to capture the "something" that exists prior to language, uncovering what words cannot articulate.
Through painting, I immerse myself in this abstraction, exploring expressions in delicate realms not yet defined by established industries.
"Liveness Through Festival"
I place paramount importance on "liveness" in exhibition spaces.
While an exhibition is conventionally an "archive" of past artworks, as living beings here and now, I cherish direct human connections—celebrating what unfolds in the present moment, much like a traditional festival.
In the exhibition space, interacting with visitors feels like shouldering a sacred portable shrine (mikoshi) together in a shared live experience. It is this organic exchange between people that drives my work.
